Taste the EU was one of those Erasmus+ experiences where something as simple as food became a way to understand each other better.
Thirty young people from Austria, Spain and Türkiye came together in Linz for seven days, bringing different habits, family traditions, recipes and stories with them. Very quickly, the kitchen became much more than a place to cook. It became a place to talk, laugh, compare cultures, question stereotypes and discover how much meaning can be hidden behind an ordinary meal.
During the exchange, we took part in cooking workshops, intercultural games, filmmaking activities and creative sessions. Activities such as “Stereotypical Food” and “Which Food Am I?” helped us look at the assumptions we sometimes make about other countries and cultures. We also visited the Linz Farmers’ Market and a local sustainable food cooperative, which gave us the chance to think more seriously about where our food comes from, how our choices affect the environment and what sustainable eating can mean in everyday life.
One of the things we wanted to leave behind after the project was something that could continue travelling even after everyone returned home. This is how our Intercultural Recipe Book was created.
The book brings together recipes, flavours, traditions and small cultural stories from Austria, Spain and Türkiye. For us, it is not simply a collection of instructions about how to prepare food. Every recipe carries something personal: a memory, a family habit, a celebration, a local tradition or a piece of everyday life.
Together with the Cine Food short films and the Food Atelier artworks, the recipe book became one of the tangible results of our exchange. We decided to make it freely available because we wanted other young people, youth workers, organisations and families to be able to use it, share it and, most importantly, cook from it.
Taste the EU reminded us that intercultural learning does not always need complicated methods. Sometimes it can start around a table, with people asking each other what they eat at home, why a certain dish matters to them and whether someone wants to try one more bite.
The project ended in Linz, but the recipes are still travelling.
